From the Streets of Cartagena ~ Moe & Ramona
Maureen & Ramona (Mixed Breed/6), Key West, Florida
Dog Like Me was truly honored to meet Maureen Cattieu ("Moe"), founder & Co-Director of Cartagena Paws, a 501c(3) Not-For-Profit corporation. Moe is originally from Buffalo, NY and began her teaching career in Cartagena, Colombia where she lived for 8 years, before recently moving to Key West with her husband. Moe is passionate about saving animals on the streets of Cartagena, and teaching empathy & compassion for all animals to her students. The streets of Colombia are home to over 400,000 strays. Cartagena Paws has rescued over 500 dogs since they began in 2015, including over 200 dogs who have been adopted in the U.S. To combat overpopulation, Cartagena Paws captures and releases strays after they've been vaccinated & spayed/neutered. They also have plans to build an educational-based rescue center in Cartagena. How can you help - head to their website to get involved, adopt and donate.
Pictured with Moe is her best friend, Ramona, who was hit by a bus in Cartagena. Ramona was run over and people were throwing bread to her when Moe found her. She suffered trauma to her leg and eye, and has had 4 surgeries, and lots of physical therapy in the waters of Colombia. Although her leg is 1.5" shorter than the others, she gets around pretty well. The next dog that Moe met had been stabbed by a gang, who often use dogs as practice.
Cartagena Paws is doing such great work that they were invited to participate in the 2020 Puppy Bowl. Report Wanyi Jiang of Marie Claire Magazine documented her trip in January with Nicole Vanderploeg from Animal Planet and animal advocate and best selling author Jill Rappaport, who all met with Co-Director of Cartagena Paws, Rose Kennedy, in Cartagena. Together, they brought back two dogs including Sol, who participate in the Puppy Bowl and Star, to be adopted.
