Bring your Fur Baby to The Emerson Resort & Spas

Naomi & Bear (Shih Tzu/6), Mount Tremper, New York

meet naomi and bear - the emmerson spaDog Like Me visited the Emerson Resort & Spa in the Catskill Mountains and had the pleasure of meeting CEO Naomi Umhey, and one of her two dogs, Bear. You would be hard pressed to find Naomi anywhere around this four-star, dog-friendly resort without Bear in her arms, or very close by. While plenty of Emerson guests enjoy the luxurious resort amenities and beautiful surroundings without their dogs, if you and your dogs are looking to be pampered, this is the place for you! The Emerson was dog-friendly years before the competition, and they even have an onsite dog park, dog-sitting services, and weddings with dogs!

As Naomi's birthday approached six years ago, she commented that "if anyone asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I would have said that I wanted a Shih Tzu puppy." My family and staff found Bear from a woman who rescues Shih Tzus (and other dogs.) She had recently rescued a Shih Tzu who just gave birth to 3 puppies. I was so surprised! I always had dogs of all kinds and wanted a Shih Tzu when the kids were young, but we had a Lhasa/Shih Tzu Rescue and other big dogs. This time, I wanted a lap dog to cuddle and nurture, in addition to our Golden Retriever, Goldie. Never in my life did I think I could love a little being as much as I love Bear. He is my constant companion.

I had everything in life - a great job, children and grandchildren who I adore, and a wonderful husband, but something was missing. Bear filled the void. My husband was hesitant at first and didn't want to be tied down to a new puppy, but now the sun rises and sets in Bear.

When Emily Fisher took over the Emerson 10 years ago, we had more & more people calling to ask if we allowed dogs. So, we added more dog-friendly rooms and amenities. While it was an adjustment for some guests, they still enjoy their stay and come back year after year. Sometimes it seems like we host more dogs than people!

While at The Emerson, your pup will love the Catamount Dog Park, a 60-foot wide by 100-foot long dedicated fenced-in area with a dog run, doggy shower and fresh running water and special section for small dogs. The Catamount Dog Park provides a safe haven for your pet to run, relax, mingle and make friends. They have lots of pet-friend rooms in both the Inn and the Lodge, and Woodnotes Grille serves up doggy delicacies with on their Pup Fare menu. And there are lots of hiking trails and other activities for dog moms, dads and the whole family to enjoy with your pup! @emersonresort
